What to say in your letter or email
As well as asking your MP to sign the EDM, you may also want to include some or all of the following points.Remember! Keep your letter brief, polite and to the point.
- As one of their constituents you would prefer their allegiance to be to you, not to an unelected monarch.
- Following a report from Lord Goldsmith earlier this year, there was widespread opposition to the idea of oaths of allegiance being made to the Queen. Public opinion is on the side of this EDM.
- Challenge the Oath is working to change all oaths, whether for parliamentarians, members of the armed forces, new citizens and other public officials.
NB: If you are typing your letter, you can use the 'select text' button above to automatically copy the text of the EDM EDM 1780: Parliamentary Oath That this House recognises that the principal duty of hon. Members is to represent their constituents in Parliament; also recognises that some hon. Members would prefer to swear an oath of allegiance to their constituents and the nation rather than the Monarch; and therefore calls on the Leader of the House to bring forward legislative proposals to introduce an optional alternative Parliamentary oath allowing hon. Members to swear allegiance to their constituents and the nation and to pledge to uphold the law rather than one pledging personal allegiance to the serving Monarch.
