Challenge the Oath
A legal requirement to swear an oath of allegiance to the Queen is discriminatory and unjust. By forcing people to take oaths they do not truly believe we devalue and undermine their importance. We believe there should be a choice of oath for republicans. This is a political and legal challenge to make that choice a reality.
Join the Legal Challenge

It is our view that the legal requirement for oaths of allegiance to the Queen are discriminator. It is our intention to challenge these oaths in the courts.

To do this we need the support of as many people as possible who are, or will be, required to take an oath of allegiance.

Add your name to the challenge

Are you a resident of the UK and wishing to take up British citizen? Do you object to the legal requirement for you to swear an oath of allegiance to the Queen in order to become a citizen?

Help us challenge the oath in the courts of law - get in touch by calling Graham Smith on 07747 608 770 or by emailing i.swear@challengetheoath.org.

We will add you to our list of challengers, and keep you informed with regular updates on the progress of the campaign.

Support the legal challenge

Challenge the Oath can access legal services pro bono (free of charge), but the legal challenge could still cost a considerable sum if unsuccessful in the initial stages. You can help the campaign get underway by underwriting the campaign's legal costs. To find out more please call James Gray on 07920 776 329.

Citizenship Oaths

The focus of the legal challenge will be on the requirement to swear an oath in order to obtain British citizenship, although we are also interested in hearing from those who have to swear an oath in order to pursue their chosen career.

We believe the citizenship oath is discriminatory and unjust and can be challenged on two points:

  • discrimination on the basis of nationality (British born citizens are not required to take such an oath);
  • discrimination on the grounds of conscience.
